Express Entry: Federal Skilled Worker / Canadian Experience Class / Federal Skilled Trades

Express Entry is an electronic system implemented by Immigration Canada in order to manage applications for permanent residence for the following programs:​

  • Federal Skilled Worker
  • Canadian Experience Class
  • Federal Skilled Trades
  • Some Provincial Nominee Program (PNP)
There are two steps to apply to Express Entry system:

Step 1: Create your Express Entry profile
You need to meet the eligibility requirements for one of the Immigration Programs managed by Express Entry. To be eligible, you will have to fill out the forms with personal information including education, work experience, language ability (test scores), skills and other factors. If your meet the criteria, your profile will be accepted into the Express Entry pool for up to one year.

Step 2: Get an Invitation to Apply (ITA) for Permanent Resident.
Candidates will be ranked in the Express Entry pool using a points-based system called the Comprehensive Ranking System. The CRS gives you a score from the information in your profile and other factors (such as occupations in demand). Once a candidate receives an Invitation to Apply (ITA), they have 90 days to submit an application online for permanent residence with all necessary accompanying documents. According to Immigration Canada, once they have received your complete application they will process it within 6 months.


Spouse / Common-law & Conjugal partner: Spouse and family sponsorship

Canadian citizens and permanent residents help their spouse, common-law and conjugal partner to get a Permanent Resident Spouse Visa for Canada through the Family Class program.

Only the following persons can be sponsored for a Canadian Spousal Sponsorship:
  • Spouse (husband, wife, partner- marriage must be legally recognized)
  • Common-Law Partner (person you are living with but not married to)
  • Conjugal Partner (if your partner does not qualify under the Spouse or Common-Law category but you are in a committed relationship equal to that if a marriage for at least 1 year)
  • Dependent children (21 or younger)
Requirements under the three categories:
  • He or she must be at least 18 years old
  • Your relationship is genuine (real) and wasn’t entered into just to get permanent resident status in Canada
  • If your spouse or common-law partner is applying in the Spouse or Common-law Partner in Canada class, he or she must co-habit (live) with you in Canada.
Who can be a sponsor?
  • You must be a Canadian Citizen, or Permanent Resident (living in Canada)
  • You must be 18 years of age or older
  • You cannot be in prison, bankrupt, under a removal order (if a permanent resident) or charged with a serious offence
  • You, yourself, cannot have been sponsored to Canada as a spouse within the last 5 years

Entrepreneurs, Investors, Self-Employed: Business & Investors

In order to support the development of a strong Canadian economy, Canada’s Business Immigration Program aims to increase employment by attracting foreign investors, entrepreneurs and self-employed individuals from outside Canada who possess capital, business acumen and entrepreneurial skills. Business Immigration Programs allow business people to obtain a Permanent Resident Visa. Be careful, these programs are kept federal and depend on which provinces you are applying to.


The Ontario Immigrant Investor Program (ONIP) aims to have experienced business people contribute to Canada’s growth and long-term prosperity by investing in Canada’s economy.

Investors
  • Investors must show that they have business experience
  • Have a net worth of at least $800,000 to $1,500,000, depending on the location and type of business
  • Minimum Investment: $500,000 to $1,000,000 depending on the location and type of business
  • A minimum ownership of 33.3% is also required.
Your investment is guaranteed. CIC will return it, without interest about 5 years and 3 months after payment.

Self-Employed:

The Self-Employed Program seeks to bring people who will become self-employed in Canada. Self-employed persons are required to have either:

  • Relevant experience that will allow them to make a significant contribution to the cultural or athletic life of Canada
  • Experience in managing a farm, and the ability to purchase and manage a farm in Canada

Entrepreneurs:

To be selected, Entrepreneurs must:

  • Own and manage a business in Canada
  • Contribute to the economy and create new jobs
  • Demonstrate business experience and a minimum legally obtained net worth.
